Antibacterial activity in vitro of Eupatorium adenophorum extracts

    • To investigate the antibacterial activity in vitro of Eupatorium adenophorum extracts, authors used 95% ethanol, petroleum ether, ethyl acetate, n-butanol and methanol to extract the antibacterial ingredients. The antibacterial activities (MBC and MIC) were analyzed with Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Shigella dysenteriae and Candida albicans by double dilution method. The result showed that E. adenophorum extracts used by ethyl acetate had the significant antibacterial effect on E. coli, S. aureus and S. dysenteriae, when its concentration was 12.5 mg/mL. When its concentration was 6.25 mg/mL, it could significantly suppress C. albicans. 5 E.adenophorum extracts had higher suppression effect on C. albicans than E. coli, S. aureus and S. dysenteriae. The result indicated that 5 E.adenophorum extracts could significantly inhibit and kill common human pathogens. Therefore, the extracts from E. adenophorum may have a certain development value in antibacterial aspects.
