Study on farmers’ behaviors of choosing broilers’ drinking water under the risk of avian influenza

    • The quality of livestocks’ drinking water is related to breeding safety. Enclosed drinking water includes deep well water, tap water, which is so clean and sanitary to cut off the spread of bird flu virus via water. In order to prevent and control bird flu virus and guarantee broilers health,it is necessary to know farmers' adopting enclosed water behaviors and its influence factors. By collecting 331 questionnaires from broiler farmers, it was found that there were still nearly 7% of farmers who took water from rivers and lakes as poultries’ drinking water. But the water would increase the disease risk. There were many factors influencing farmers’ behaviors of choosing enclosed water by Logit model. Among them, gender, participation willingness to joint prevention and control of avian influenza were significant factors. Namely,if farmers were male or had stronger participation willingness to joint prevention and control of avian influenza, they inclined to select the enclosed water. Farmers’ risk preference was in contrast to the expected due to income limitation and farm conditions. The relevant policy suggestions were put forward finally.
