Abstract: Eight new and fine bitter gourd varieties were selected from nationwide to screen suitable varieties for planting in Tunchang county, Hainan. Comparative field experiments were carried out, and agronomic characters, disease resistance, stress resistance and yield of each variety were investigated and compared. The results indicated that Zhonghua 1 and Guinongke 1 showed good comprehensive traits, their plot yields were recorded as 43.30 kg (33 324.30 kg/hm2) and 43.23 kg (33 270.45 kg/hm2) respectively, increased by 16.43% and 16.24% over control. The other varieties also showed good comprehensive characters, their yields were significantly higher than that of control. Thus Zhonghua 1 and Guinongke 1 performed better in agronomic characters, resistance and yield, were appropriate for winter planting and could be extended for demonstration in Tunchang county.
